Match of the Day - The greatest WM match no one saw coming!

Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus - World Heavyweight title match - Wrestlemania XXVIII (2012)

I can't say I expected this World Heavyweight title match featuring the indy sensation, Daniel Bryan and the Celtic Warrior, Sheamus to be as shocking as it was. For such a prestigious title to be shoved so far down the card as this was, Bryan and Sheamus made the best of it with their amazingly athletic abilities, honor for the title, as well as their wonderful showmanship. No one expected Sheamus to go all PWG, three shooting star presses in a row, no-selling a piledriver on the apron, and perform a Johnny Saint Special, but the big guy from Dublin, Ireland really impressed the crowd, everyone watching at home, and even myself that night.

Truly the greatest 18 second match of all time.

Happy April Fools day.

Match of the Day - The Masada/Kasai no mat, glass pane, & gusset plate deathmatch

Masada vs. Jun Kasai - No Mat, Glass Pane, Gusset Plate Deathmatch Pain Limit finals - FREEDOMS (2012)

Here's another tournament match...

CZW's Masada and "The Crazy Monkey" Jun Kasai know how to put on an ultraviolent, stomach curdling, how-is-this-stuff-even-legal?, bloody-ass deathmatch. If you don't like the sound of anything that I just wrote, please do not watch this match. If you love the sound of what I wrote above, you are one sick fuck.

To add to this weeks theme, and in good practice with Ash Wednesday/Lent's giving something up until Jesus comes back on Easter with chocolate eggs, this match gets rid of the mat or canvas of the ring. Instead of all that soft stuff on top of the ring, it is completely bare with only its boards intact... well, that is, until Masada decides to tear off some boards to create a gaping hole in the ring. Once Masada strips the boards, he places a pane of glass over the hole and then, if it's pretty self explanatory as to what he does next, Masada powerbombs Kasai through the glass and down through the ring to the floor, or whatever is under a ring.

Luckily, Kasai survives the drop with only a few minor scratches and some skin peeled off. Then he finishes the match, of course.

Theme results

Ring Destruction: The mat/canvas is removed to began with then Masada rips out some boards for added hardcore nonsense.

Match of the Day - Two indie darlings and some masked dude

CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Kane - WWE Championship Triple Threat match - No Way Out (2012)

I'm just going to keep this one short and sweet because this match is not too old, yet I honestly don't remember the AJ Lee love triangle (or would it be a square?) storyline too well. I will however point out how much things have actually changed since this match in June of 2012.

Plus, this match is pretty good. But you probably already guessed that.

Match of the Debut - The debut of Kassius Ohno

Kassius Ohno vs. Xavier Woods - FCW TV (2012)

Kassius Ohno, better known by some as indy sensation, Chris Hero, was released from his WWE development contract last Friday. I would say this marks the end of KO, but I have a feeling he'll be back and eventually getting his time to shine in WWE, whatever that may mean nowadays. To reflect on his release, here is the debut, rolling elbow and all, of Chris Hero's transformation into "Kassius Ohno" against Xavier Woods in FCW (now NXT).

Song of the Day - Jesus in the Courtyard

King Dude - Jesus in the Courtyard from Burning Daylight (2012)

King Dude is the solo project of TJ Cowgill from the black metal bands Teen Cthulhu and Book of Black Earth. His sound is very reminiscent of neofolk acts of the 80's or a black metal Leonard Cohen of sorts.

Very interesting stuff.

Match of the Day - It's not Slater time.

Heath Slater vs. Vader - Monday Night Raw (2012)

Despite the constant plugging of Raw's 1000th episode last year, we did get to see Heath Slater, the super jobber of the WWE get squashed for a few by returning legends who actually looked in good shape for their age. Albeit there were some segments of rookie Heath Slater versus veteran superstars from the past that weren't all too great (sorry Lauper), but for the most part this was a relatively good concept.

On this particular Heath Slater squashing, the "One Man Band" would take on the returning big man, the man they call Vader - no stranger to this blog. But not only was this Vader's first match on Raw since 2005, no no no, this was Vader's first time seen on TV since before being in a coma for 30 something days in Japan, causing him to lose 112 pounds and to subsequently turn his life around. And while Vader has had countless surgeries on his knees and the rest of his body, he still could move in the ring with the lightweight rookie of Heath Slater.

Theme Results

Returner: Vader to WWE.

Song of the Day - Keep Your Opinions To Yourself

Host - Keep Your Opinions To Yourself from Split w/ KYOTY (2012)

Just learned that this quite angry hardcore outfit from New Hampshire will be playing a show in my neck of the woods real soon (Portland, Maine)! These guys put out a very solid but much too short split with KYOTY, this song is named after the abbreviation, which features my favorite Keep Your Opinions To Yourself track and, after a long time thinking it out, my definitive song of the year 2012.

KYOTY might not be playing with Host as far as I know, but these guys seem to be a well-oiled wrecking crew of good times all by themselves from the sound of 'em!

I'm pretty pumped for all the awesomeness still coming Portland's way...

Song of the Day - Goatman

Goat - Goatman from World Music (2012)

Goat are a psychedelic voodoo rock band from a very remote village known as Korpilombolo somewhere deep in Sweden. Rumor has it, of course.

These guys made a lot of best of lists last year and that actually how I heard about them. They even made Spin's top 20 metal albums of the year, too - though they aren't really a metal band at all.

Song of the Day - At first, I thought it was an ocean but then realized it was only a puddle

Dore Mear Beon - At first, I thought it was an ocean but then realized it was only a puddle from Dore Mear Beon EP (2012)

Dore Mear Beon is a one man math rock band from Ontario, Canada. That one man is named, Andrew Sagriff.

This song closes with a sample from Waking Life, a Richard Linklater film I watched once about lucid dreaming and the meaning of life.

Real Kind - Ocean, Quick! from Hard Red Winter (sketch) (2012)

Real Kind is the humble moniker of Marissa Owens from my favorite place, Portland, Maine.

A more fancy and full version of Hard Red Winter will be available in April.

I think this version sounds great as it is, though. Just sayin'...

Song of the Day - Devil Town (by way of cello doom!)

Correspondences - Devil Town from Christmas // Devil Town (2012)

Usually I wait to Wednesday to post covers but whatever...

Here's Correspondences (all-female cello-driven doom band formally of Portland, Maine) taking on Daniel Johnston (one of the most covered musicians of all time) and his all too familiar song for a lot of us living in devil towns with vampires as friends.

PS: I'm not sure why this song says it's by Lee (as in Lee King, the drummer?). It sounds like Correspondences to me and is on their bandcamp...
