Song of the Day - Song for a Netflix account

Pat "the bunny" Schneeweis - Song for a Netflix account from The Mark Inside (2013)

Legendary anarcho folk punker and leader of Ramshackle Glory laying down some sick tracks about hope and other touchy subjects.

Song of the Day - Meet Me Here At Dawn

Cass McCombs - Meet Me Here At Dawn from A (2004)

Cass McCombs is playing a show at The Oak + The Ax tomorrow in Biddeford, Maine.

I don't know much about him other this song which has been covered by Andrew Bird and my late friend, Martin Smith.

Therefore it's very near and dear to my heart.

Song of the Day - Jesus in the Courtyard

King Dude - Jesus in the Courtyard from Burning Daylight (2012)

King Dude is the solo project of TJ Cowgill from the black metal bands Teen Cthulhu and Book of Black Earth. His sound is very reminiscent of neofolk acts of the 80's or a black metal Leonard Cohen of sorts.

Very interesting stuff.

Song of the Day - Smith & Jones Forever

Silver Jews - Smith & Jones Forever from American Water (1998)

One of my favorite songs and the last song that Silver Jews ever performed live.

Finals week is finished!

Song of the Day - The Tide

Mallory - The Tide from Strange Homes (2010)

The opening lyrics of this wild folk punk number are by Mogli, a singer-songwriter from Halifax. The song the lyrics are taken from is called, "Back to You" off Mogli's I Miss You EP.

Song of the Day - Witches

Blackbird Raum - Witches from Swidden (2008)

Blackbird Raum are an anarchopunk band with acoustic instruments ranging from accordions and banjos to washboards and singing saws.

Blackbird Raum will be playing a really sweet show this Friday with equally unique folk punk acts, Speaker for the Dead and Portland, Maine's finest, Butcher Boy at The Oak & The Ax in Biddeford!

It'll be something special for sure!

Blackbird Raum also have a new album called, False Weavers out now! You can stream it on Spotify if you're into that sort of thing.

Song of the Day - Love Leaves Its Abusers

Songs: Ohia - Love Leaves Its Abusers from Axxess & Ace (1999)

Jason Molina's death only adds more sadness to his already beautifully sad music.

RIP.

Song of the Day - Ocean, Quick!

Real Kind - Ocean, Quick! from Hard Red Winter (sketch) (2012)

Real Kind is the humble moniker of Marissa Owens from my favorite place, Portland, Maine.

A more fancy and full version of Hard Red Winter will be available in April.

I think this version sounds great as it is, though. Just sayin'...

Song of the Day - Empty Ocean

Butcher Boy - Empty Ocean from Shoreless Sea (2012)

Here's another local number for ya. It's by Portland's own Butcher Boy. These guys aren't breaking up though; they're actually going on a nation-wide-ish tour real soon!

While this song has been featured on their live release, 'Get Butchered', this version is a much slower and spookier rendition. It's also one of my favorite tracks of 2012.

Song of the Day - Pile Of Dirt

Speaker For The Dead - Pile Of Dirt from I Hope You Have Fun While You Sleep (2011)

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Speaker Of The Dead play their dancing folk punk music for the first time. I wasn't quite sure what they would sound like or cause the crowd to do - since the show started off as a seated event - but as their music began to pick up and people started to feel the energy pumping through SFTD's chords, the chairs were thrown to the side and the partying began.

Thanks to Greg McKillop, the frontman, for putting the show on! It was a real nice treat and a good sort of welcome back for me as I am now home for the holidays!

This track is supposedly an Allenby Beardsly cover.

The Gundam fighter pilot?
