Song of the Day - Throats and Tongues Alone

The Body in the Kelp - Throats and Tongues Alone from The Body in the Kelp EP (2013)

I've heard a lot of voice samples, spoken word samples, movies and TV samples, and samples of all sorts in my day (and a lot that I have posted here), but never have I ever heard such a wicked Mainely sample as this one. This song truly speaks to my Maine maritime heart.



The Body in the Kelp are a group made up of musicians who came together for the Portland Space Gallery's 5th annual 48 Music Fest. I couldn't make it out to this year's festival, so I'm not sure who made up this stoner meets doom meets blues band... but if I had, I would have thanked them for this beautiful piece of art.

PS These gentlemen will be playing at Phantom Buffalo's new full-length release party at The Space Gallery on Congress Street this Thursday! Rumor has it that double A will be selling some pretty sweet prints of the album artwork there, as well!

Too bad everyone left to go to work or to church or wherever/whatever people do after 6 o'clock on Sundays...

Maybe because that's what I wanted to name my first album when I was kid and had dreams of becoming a big rock star some day...

Song of the Day - Devil Town (by way of cello doom!)

Usually I wait to Wednesday to post covers but whatever...

Here's Correspondences (all-female cello-driven doom band formally of Portland, Maine) taking on Daniel Johnston (one of the most covered musicians of all time) and his all too familiar song for a lot of us living in devil towns with vampires as friends.



PS: I'm not sure why this song says it's by Lee (as in Lee King, the drummer?). It sounds like Correspondences to me and is on their bandcamp...

Match of the Day - That time Owen Hart won the World Title

Remember when Owen Hart won the WWF World Heavyweight Title?

No? Well don't worry, I don't either. Not just because this was a Coliseum Video exclusive (usually matches that were taped only to be released on special video packages) but because he actually doesn't.

Turns out even though this match looks like it ends with Owen Hart getting the pinfall on his older brother, Bret thanks to Jim Neidhart hitting "The Hitman" in the back with his anvil-tough arm, the decision is soon called-off thanks to the interference and the match is restarted and officially ends with Bret retaining his coveted gold. However, you don't see that part of the match as most of the "Owen Hart wins the WWF Title" videos online have this important part of the match cut out.

It's a shame that Owen didn't ever win the title though. Maybe not so much this way, but it would have been a really nice change from super face champion to bitter heel shadow-of-his-brother-no-more champion. Maybe this would have led to an earlier Attitude Era? I doubt it though. If anything Bret would have just won the title back at Survivor Series (where Bob Backlund beat "The Hitman" via submission) of that year.

Anyways, here's Owen Hart versus Bret Hart, brother versus brother, in a Lumberjack match featuring the oddball characters of 1994 and the closest time Owen Hart ever got to becoming a World Champion.

Oh yeah, and this happened in Portland, Maine.

Song of the Day - Silicion

This number is from instrumental heavy metal heavyweights, Lord Earth. Lord Earth hails from my hometown of South Portland actually.

I'm not sure how I didn't hear about them until reading this short article in The Portland Phoenix today describing "Metal Mondays" as well as a sweeeeeet mention of Jesse Gertz AKA Glass Fingers and his new "sex music".

Here's another local number for ya. It's by Portland's own Butcher Boy. These guys aren't breaking up though; they're actually going on a nation-wide-ish tour real soon!


While this song has been featured on their live release, 'Get Butchered', this version is a much slower and spookier rendition. It's also one of my favorite tracks of 2012.

Tonight The Waldos of Portland, Maine played their last show. It's a shame to see another stellar local act call it quits but bands in Portland are like the city itself... They rise like a phoenix and in that phoenix is a new band that is even cooler than the last.

For any of you who don't know, Portland is sorta like a phoenix since it burned down three times.
