Kyoko Kimura vs. Kayoko Haruyama - JWP Openweight title match - JWP Pure Slam (2009)
Time for some hardcore female action. Yes I meant to write that, and no I'm not going to change it.
Kyoko Kimura takes on Kayoko Haruyama in a super violent bout that includes an unforgettable balcony spot... yes, this is the match where Kimura jumps off a balcony, landing directly onto Haruyama below:
Kimura also cuts Haruyama with some sort of shank, straggles her with a chain, and trades some pretty stiff-looking strikes. However, everything else is irrelevant once you've seen this balcony spot.
Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy - "I Quit" match - Backlash (2009)
This is the Hardy Boyz feud where Matt Hardy hinted that he was responsible for the fire that burned Jeff's home and killed his dog. Why did Matt do it? Jealousy, of course. This feud first started when Matt lost the ECW title to Jack Swagger (remember that?) and later attacked Jeff with a chair, costing his brother the World Heavyweight title. With the Hardy's title-less, it was the perfect time for the two brothers to finally have a big feud for who's the better Hardy Boy... apparently.
The Hardy Boyz "I Quit" match at Backlash was the final chapter of their four part saga. Ironically, this match included the Hardy's working extensively on the leg for the other to experience enough pain to say "I Quit", but in the end when one Hardy came up with the victory, the other walked away with a broken arm.
Jon Moxley vs. Brain Damage - Dining Deathmatch - CZW Tournament of Death 8 (2009)
Remember how I said that last deathmatch wasn't like the kind where the two wrestlers beat each other with fine-china until one has a near-death experience or something like that? Yeah, well this is that match with the china (there probably weren't that "fine") - among other things you would find in dining rooms, like: tables, chairs, grandfather clocks, and skilsaws (I'll get to that later).
But what was for dinner? Thumbtack cake, of course! At least that's what I've heard... and it makes sense really, not only because this is Combat Zone Wrestling, but because they wasted it by throwing it into each other's faces rather than eating it. I guess if they had eaten it, it would have been called a cake eating deathmatch.
I'm on a roll with bad jokes this week. Hah, roll.. like bread.
I'm sorry.
This match between Jon Moxley (Currently the US champ in WWE as Dean Ambrose) and the late Brain Damage is probably one of the best Moxley deathmatches and heavily talked about especially because of the skilsaw spot. There, I got to it.
Flip vs. Stinky the Homeless Guy - Fans Bring The LEGO Deathmatch - Inter Species Wrestling 4 Years of This?! (2009)
Flip takes on his former Lady and the Tramp tag team partner, the late Stinky the Homeless Guy in a match featuring everyone's favorite childhood building toys, LEGOs!
Before you start rolling your eyes at me internet goers, hear me out: Would you rather not get put through a table, get fluorescent lights smashed over your head, or step on a Lego? I know which one I'd rather not have to deal with... the Lego one, of course! That shit hurts like hell.
Okay, so being slammed on some Legos wouldn't be as painful as, say, a gusset or a kenzan (look it up), but you gotta at least give it up to these two for going where not a lot of wrestlers had gone before... the toy box.
Also, check out that sweet D'Lo Brown Lego vest! This match touches all my childhood nostalgia buttons.
Kota Ibushi vs. YOSHIHIKO - Ironman Heavymetalweight and KO-D Openweight Championship match - DDT (2009)
Two great Japanese wrestling stars of Dramatic Dream Team go one-on-one with each other's title on the line. Kota Ibushi was the KO-D champ at the time while YOSHIHIKO (dressed as Hulk Hogan) was the reigning Ironman Heavymetalweight champ - a title that is defended under 24/7 rules just as the Hardcore title once was back in the states. The seemingly normal title match soon becomes a 30 minute slobberknocker!
PS: I heard that YOSHIHIKO stiffed Ibushi pretty good in this match due to some backstage heat/bad blood between one another. Maybe that Infinity Destroyer YOSHIHIKO delivered to Ibushi was a little more personal than perceived.
I sure hope YOSHIHIKO gets signed to WWE soon so his career can really blow up!
Santina Marella vs. Vickie & Chavo Guerrero - Handicap Hog Pen match for the title of Miss Wrestlemania - WWE Extreme Rules (2009)
Get a load of this shit:
I don't know where to start with this match. I mean, it's got Santino Marella in drag as his "twin sister" Santina taking on Vickie Guerrero who somehow won a Miss Wrestlemania (during some 'Mania filler I must have missed while taking a bathroom break) with the help of her nephew, Chavo in his "nice" clothes. Oh yeah, and there's a hog pen full of shit. And I'm not just taking about this match or The King's constant botching beforehand either.
While the first hog pen match featuring the Connecticut Blue Blood, Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Henry Orpheus Godwinn - whose initials cleverly make out the word HOG - started in the ring and eventually made its way to the pig sty where the loser was whoever got thrown in first, most hog pen matches today are placed next to the stage and start and finish in the pen.
El Generico vs. Nick Jackson vs. Kota Ibushi vs. Jigsaw - Chikara King of Trios (2009)
Now to be honest, I haven't seen a lot of Chikara, a still relatively unknown independent promotion that has actually been around since 2002. I will say this though: I've only seen/heard good things about this company and from what I've seen, I've enjoyed. While similar to other promotions like Ring of Honor where they take pride in "professional" wrestling and the true art behind it, Chikara actually has a much sillier side, whereas ROH is pretty dead serious most of the time - the only weakness I've seen from that respective brand of pro wrestling. Chikara also incorporates colorful characters and luchadore style that comes with a sort of Japanese wrestling and cosplay feel to it which actually works and makes sense as the whole roster can still wrestle their way out of paper bags... Something most WWE superstars today surely can't do.
Anyways, this is probably one of Chikara's greatest matches. I'm not just saying that because people say that on Youtube either, I truthfully believe this to be hell of a must-see match for any fan of pro wrestling. Every character brings a great amount of agility and ring-saviness to this match and every second is a thrill to watch. Yes, a lot of it does look like a very choreographed dance number that these young athletes recite every night but hey, I don't care. It's damn entertaining and actually very talented. Can you do a moonsault off the top rope, land on your feet, and then do a standing moonsault right after?
Really?
Prove it.
This match comes from King of Trios 2009: Night two were all four individuals had wrestled in a group of three with respected teammates usually from a related aspect such as company i.e. Nick Jackson (one half of the Young Bucks) and El Generico whom both represented Pro Wrestling Guerrilla the night before as they were title holders of that company at the time. Also, Japanese wrestling sensation, Kota Ibushi (winner of this match) wrestled in a team comprised of DDT wrestlers, a Japanese promotion Ibushi currently works for and actually has had a number of intense matches with El Generico just like this one.
The only time this match got a little hairy was when El Generico went to give Ibushi the "Brainbuster" from the top rope and it actually looks like Generico loses a hold of Ibushi and he lands awkwardly on the turnbuckle. However, the commentators say that he kicked out of the Brainbuster on the way down so you could counter out to stick Generico with an amazing "super-reverse-rana".
