Song of the Day - Den Femte Statsmakt

Black Debbath - Den Femte Statsmakt from Den Femte Statsmakt (2004)

Norwegian heavy metal/stoner metal by way of Black Sabbath.

Not, by any means, meant to be taken seriously.

Match of the Day - Greg "The Hammer" Valentine goes hardcore

Greg Valentine vs. Kendo Nagasaki - No Rope Barbed Wire Deathmatch - BJW (1995)

It may seem surprising at first that Greg "The Hammer" Valentine would be found here fighting in a Japanese deathmatch in one of the most violent Japanese deathmatch promotions, Big Japan. But if you really think about earlier Greg Valentine (before the jet black hair, Rhythm & Blues days), Valentine was just out to hurt people. John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats made a great point about Greg Valentine during an intro to his live song, "Song for Greg Valentine" where Darnielle describes Valentine as a wrestler more out to break his opponents' legs and cripple them than to win matches. Which is pretty awesome, by the way.

That being said though, this is not the Greg Valentine that fought Roddy Piper in a brutal dog collar match or tried to end "Rugged" Ronnie Garvin's career, this is a miserable shell of a man who happens to be fighting in a Japanese deathmatch. Thus, this match really suffers because of it. Granted this match is still violent and features all the goodies that you would expect in a deathmatch like barbed wire, brawling through the crowd, and that red wet stuff, it's very slow and with little to no drive. No one breaks their legs, no one gets crippled, no nothing.

Match of the Day - Oh you didn't know? Team Rockabilly & Jesse James?

The Rockabilly & Jesse James vs. Los Boricuas (Jesus Castillo & Jose Estrada, Jr.) - Shotgun Saturday Night (1997)

YOU better call somebody; because it happened. Before the New Age Outlaws where crotch-chopping their way to 5 tag team championships, plus the one they got almost 14 years later this weekend, they were just two guys with actual outlaw-like gimmicks. It might sound cool at first, but when I say "outlaw", I really just mean "cowboy" and there was also some Honky Tonk Man, country bumpkin nonsense to it, too. While The Rockabilly (that was pre-Ass Man/Mr. Ass/Bad Ass Billy Gunn), and Jesse James (previously The Roadie/Double J and Pre-Road Dogg) made an appearance here together under the guidance of the Honky Tonk Man himself, this team was not yet assembled on the main show, Monday Night Raw. No, it wasn't until a few weeks after this match (featuring two halves of the Puerto Rican gang, Los Boricuas) that The Rockabilly and Jesse James would be seen again, this time cracking HTM's skull with his own guitar.

Match of the Day - The 1992 Royal Rumble match

The 30-man Royal Rumble Match for the WWF Championship - Royal Rumble (1992)

Considered by some as the greatest Royal Rumble match, the 1992 30-man battle royal was unique in that it was not just for a chance to take on the WWF Champion down the line, but a chance to immediately win the championship upon survival. It might sound easy enough, but with 29 other men, some of which never getting this opportunity again, it made for quite an all or nothing situation.

Watch this colorful spectacle before tuning in to the Royal Rumble tonight or watch this instead, either way watch this for one of the greatest Royal Rumble moments of all time. Enjoy!

Song of the Day - Rumble

Link Wray & His Ray Men - Rumble from Rumble single (1958)

Banned from many radio stations in the late 50's, Link Wray's early experimentation of distortion and the 12-bar blues is an instrumental street fight. Are you ready to rumble?
