Match of the Day - Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie take out the trash at WM14!

Here's another great gimmick match from 90's era WrestleMania:

Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie vs. The New Age Outlaws (Billy Gunn & Road Dogg) - first ever Dumpster match for the WWF tag team championship - WrestleMania XIV (1998)

Oh yes, the dumpster match!

After Chainsaw Charlie AKA 53 year old Terry Funk and his tag team partner, Cactus Jack were sent for a ride in a dumpster courtesy of the New Age Outlaws on Raw, the hardcore legends were certainly looking for revenge. So, what better way to get their revenge than by taking on the two young punks, Billy Gunn and Road Dogg, in a special match featuring the very same type of trash container that Foley and Funk almost had their careers come to a crashing end in when they were pushed off the ramp on Raw 2 months prier. Despite the titles being on the line in this match, this wasn't about winning the gold for the hardcore legends. No, it was all about punishing Gunn and Road Dogg and then taking out the trash...

The result: Chainsaw Charlie and Cactus Jack do end up taking out the trash big time with the help of the trusty forklift! But because they used a dumpster in the backstage area rather than the designated one for the match, the New Age Outlaws lobbied for the titles to be dropped. So, the next night on Raw the titles were contested in a cage match with the two teams from the dumpster match facing off one last time. The match ended with the New Age Outlaws getting their titles back thanks to the help of their new brotherhood: D-Generation X!

And yes, Mick Foley does take a huge bump, this time in the form of a ladder spot into the dumpster. There was no need for the ladder in this match other than for Foley to take a nasty bump from a high place once again.

Match of the Day - Jerry Lawler pokes Terry Funker's eye out

Jerry "The King" Lawler vs. Terry Funk - CWA (Memphis Wrestling) (1981)

First of, Jerry Lawler is a lover of chickens.

This has to be up there as one of my favorite gimmick matches of all time. No fans, no refs, no police, no rules, no winner... just Jerry Lawler versus crazy-since-the-dawn-of-time, Terry Funk.

All Funk wanted was a match one-on-one with The King of Memphis to prove once and for all that Funk is a better man than Lawler (or that he's a yellow pig or something along those lines). So, the Funkster decides to invite Lawler to an empty arena match in the Mid-South Coliseum at 1 o'clock sharp, and while Lawler didn't seem too into it at the time, Lawler would eventually show up - crown and all.

The best part of this angle had to have been Terry Funk cussing-out The King as he was seemingly going to no-show on Funk's invitation. Terry even tries to count-out Lawler, but of course, Lawler had to pull through with Funk's challenge and make his appearance. After all, Jerry Lawer was the biggest name in Memphis at the time, he definitely could not have been seen as "yellow" or, even worse, as a coward!

One of my favorite lines from this match comes from Terry Funk when Jerry Lawler finally arrives and Funk, seeing that Lawler has brought his cape and crown, shouts, "Hey Lawler, come on up here. I'm gonna brake your crown. I'm gonna brake his crown, Lance...".

Unfortunately for Terry Funk however, Jerry Lawler ends up getting the best of him as Funk's plan of blinding The King with a spike made of wood backfires and Funk ends up with his eye poked out (Lawler kicked Funk's elbow with sent the spike right into his poor eye). This terrible turn of events - which Funk rightfully deserved - left the Funkster crying in pain as Lawler fled the scene unharmed with his reputation unscratched.

This is no Flair/Funk five star match, but it damn sure is a classic.

Match of the Day - The not-so-Flash-y Funks...

The Quebecers vs. Terry Funk & Too Cold Scorpio - Raw (1998)

According to storyline, Terry Funk's teammate at the time, Cactus Jack was fed-up with Stone Cold Steve Austin getting all the spotlight so he told the fans that they would never see him again and "quit". Soon after this Mick Foley would appear as his Dude Love persona once again to take on Dude Love's former partner, Stone Cold Steve Austin at Unforgiven.

So, Terry Funk - formerly billed as "Chainsaw Charlie" with pantyhose on his face around this time - introduced us to his new partner, a wrestler "we all knew" who was also quite "Funk"-y.

His mystery partner turned out to be Too Cold Scorpio, a former wrestler of Extreme Championship Wrestling with Terry Funk. And while Too Cold Scorpio wasn't a protege of Funk's in ECW, Scorpio, like Funk, was not showing his true colors in WWF as he was billed as "Flash Funk", a held-back zoot suit-wearing dance machine right up until this moment.

Another feature of this match includes Funk and Scorpio's opponents, The Quebecers. The Quebecers at this time were mostly used as a preliminary tag team and no longer wore their mountie suits. Also, Pierre still looked like a pirate as he did when he was "Jean-Pierre Lafitte"; eye-patch and all!

The match ends with Too Cold Scorpio giving a perfect 450 splash to Pierre.

Soon after this, Terry Funk took on his former tag team partner, Mick Foley (as himself) in a no holds barred - falls count anywhere match to see if Foley had what it takes to get another shot at Austin's title, all the while Too Cold Scorpio went on to join the J.O.B. Squad and phase out of the company.
